Who We Are: A Letter From Our Community Manager

Hey Nerds!

My name is Joe, and I’m your new Community Manager! I thought that this would be a great opportunity to finally introduce myself around here. This also gives me a great opportunity to tell you why I’m here, who we are as a community, and what we’re all about.

As previously stated, I’m Joe. You might also know me as BIGBITEJoe. Like so many other community members, I came to the Noname Nerd community as a Noname Nerd Affiliate back in 2020. At the time, we were struggling to get this community off the ground. I offered up some free advice as an experienced community admin to Brian, the Noname Nerd himself, and before I knew it, he asked me to be an admin for our Discord. Later I helped him tame the often explosive Facebook group, and some time thereafter, helped anchor and solidify our community eSports organization, N3. I’m now a Brand Ambassador for the company. On top of all that, I’ve also taken to writing and producing a lot of our content marketing lately, including our blogs and podcasts. Outside of the Noname Nerd Communities, I run BIGBITEMedia, where we currently produce let’s plays and streaming gaming content. I also am a full time retail manager to keep the lights on. I have a loving wife, a hilarious 7 year old daughter who is getting into gaming, and a son on the way.

So that’s who I am, but why did I stick around here? It’s kind of hard to explain, to be honest. At the time, BIGBITE had just had a viral hit or two, so we were actively exploring partnerships, trying to capitalize on what could (and turned out to) be fleeting success while we had it. A number of brands invited me to their discords and facebook communities, but this one…it just hit different. It was such a positive space, where people could just be themselves. People were genuinely helpful, and seemed to care about each other. In retrospect, it’s kind of messed up, really, that this kind of experience is so rare. But I think that’s really why we’re here, and we’ve sort of codified that over the last year.

The mission of the Noname Nerd Communities is to provide a safe space for nerds from all walks of life, to come together and celebrate the things that make nerd culture so special. We make a concerted effort to make sure that people who are often gate-kept out of these communities feel welcome here, including people of varying ethnicities, genders, sexualities, etc. We also back this up by having a very diverse staff for all of our community functions. Bottom line, when we say “Nerds Belong Here”, we truly mean ALL Nerds Belong Here.

Going one step further, I honestly feel like the inclusive nature of this community leads to one very special thing. This is, by far, the most caring community I have ever had the chance to be a part of, and had the great honor of leading. People here are genuinely helpful and try to build each other up. They truly care about each other, are supportive, and want the best for everyone. It’s a beautiful thing to see in action.

I want to tell you a story that happened this morning in one of our communities. Honestly, this is why I wrote this letter today. We had one of our community members coming to terms with the fact that they were likely about to have a parent pass away. Immediately, without hesitation, every single person who was around this morning rallied around this person, surrounding them with love and support. As a community manager, this sort of reaction truly warms my heart. And the beautiful thing is, this wasn’t an isolated incident. That’s just what we do here.

Here’s the bottom line. Nerds don’t just belong here. They are loved and appreciated here. So, if you are an active community member, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being the reason that I show up every day to manage this community. For those of you who are around, but are not super active, I’d love it if you’d come around more often! And for those of you who haven’t checked out our communities yet, I’d like to personally invite you to come and hang out with us! I promise you won’t be disappointed. You can find links to both our Facebook and Discord communities at NerdsBelongHere.com. And if you’re having a great time with us, please be sure to spread the word, and invite your friends and family!

We’ll return to your regularly scheduled content creator tips and tricks next week.

Stay nerdy, my friends!

Cheers,

Joe
